What can we offer to air transport in the new normal created by the new coronavirus pandemic?

The COVID-19 crisis has almost completely halted air travel, however, this mode of transport is destined to return and not disappear, at least in the medium term. In this regard, airports and airlines must adapt and, undoubtedly, strive to regain the trust of their passengers. Naturally, they will not be willing to wait in long lines and interact with large numbers of people during the check-in and boarding process.

Adaptation goes beyond simply wearing masks at all times. From our perspective, the real questions airports must answer are twofold:

How can interactions between operators and travelers be minimized without sacrificing security?

How can the long lines and crowds at airports be reduced?

It's clear that no matter how many technological developments and adaptation ideas are implemented, it will be impossible to eliminate interactions between operators and passengers. However, lines and crowds can be mitigated through the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.

Motorized walkways: In several countries around the world, these walkways have already been implemented and serve as the first filter for passengers entering the immigration process. They reduce interaction with an operator at the beginning of the process; passengers only need to enter with their boarding pass.
Biometric immigration: This applies to both passenger entry and exit. This system, a pioneer in Colombia, reduces the average wait time from 45 minutes to approximately 15 minutes. On the other hand, the process in the module can take between 2 and 5 minutes on average, while in the corridor the estimated time is between 14 and 40 seconds. This system offers greater security regarding identity and less contact between passengers and officials.

The implementation of these solutions will undoubtedly contribute to improving the passenger experience at airports without sacrificing the inherent security of these spaces.

At Incomelec, we have had the opportunity to implement this type of project at the Bogotá and Medellín airports, and we want you to learn about its benefits and positive impact on daily airport operations.
