Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral—TR-490 turnstiles

LThe Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is considered one of the 7 wonders of Colombia, carved entirely from salt, unique in its kind, and of unparalleled majesty. Located 180 meters underground, it houses an artistic collection of salt and marble sculptures. Its religious and spiritual atmosphere attracts tourists from all over the country and the world.

An average of 50,000 people visit this important site each month, and therefore the administration needed to install a secure pedestrian access control system that could withstand the salinity of the environment and effectively control the entry and exit of visitors.

Incomelec was the company responsible for supplying, installing, and commissioning the access control turnstiles for the cathedral. For this project, the installed equipment consisted of Automatic Systems TR-490 series tripod turnstiles.

This equipment was selected because:

  • It controls pedestrian access one by one quickly and efficiently.

  • The security requirements, which are not particularly stringent, allow for this. They control high volumes of people and were designed for implementation in tourist attractions and venues.

  • The turnstiles installed at the Cathedral were integrated with a QR code reading system that allows visitors to pass through. This QR code is given to the visitor after purchasing their admission ticket.

These units were installed more than 6 years ago, and one of their main benefits is their resistance to the salinity of the environment thanks to their materials and manufacturing quality.

In addition, these TR 490 turnstiles offer 5 different operating modes for each direction of passage:

  • Access always free.

  • Access always mechanically locked.

  • Access mechanically locked with automatic unlocking that allows access in case of a power outage.

  • Access electrically controlled.

  • Access electrically controlled with automatic unlocking that allows access in case of a power outage.
