Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento International Airport (El Dorado) is the most important airport in Colombia. It is located in the western part of Bogotá, D.C. Its facilities, technology, and operations position it today as the leading airport in Latin America in terms of cargo volume. It is also the third most significant airport in Latin America in terms of passenger volume, surpassed only by Mexico City International Airport and São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport.
On average, and according to official figures, it is estimated that “in the first nine months of 2021, 20 million passengers were transported nationwide, of which 16 million passed through El Dorado Airport” (El Espectador, 2021). With these figures, El Dorado Airport reached 88% of the capacity operated in 2019.
As Colombia's main airport, it receives hundreds of vehicles daily that need parking. Therefore, in 2020, airport authorities and the operator, OPAIN, decided to modernize the parking system, requiring state-of-the-art equipment to make all parking areas more efficient. For this purpose, Incomelec supplied, installed, and commissioned a modern parking system; details of the installed equipment are provided below.
The installed vehicle access control system consists of a Horus parking system and Automatic Systems barriers that ensure the excellent functioning and operation of the North, Central, and South parking lots of the airport.
To streamline and improve the collection process, Incomelec installed the precise number of ATMs needed to avoid payment bottlenecks. They also implemented enhanced payment options and a license plate recognition system for faster vehicle exit, preventing congestion.
Horus brand ATMs can operate in up to 6 different languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, German and Catalan, facilitating and improving the experience of international tourists.
The Automatic Systems barriers offer two major advantages:
They open and close in 1.2 seconds, ensuring almost 100% controlled vehicle entry and exit.
They have a frequency inverter that guarantees progressive acceleration and controlled deceleration, preventing technical or mechanical malfunctions generally caused by vibrations from the boom at the end of its travel.
